Breaking: Eleme Bridge collapses cutting off movement of petroleum products.
A major link that connects a section of the East-West road to major national infrastructure sited in Eleme, Rivers State has collapsed.
According to local sources who spoke to The Neighbourhood, residents and users of the Eleme section of the road woke up on Thursday morning to notice that the Okunu Aleto bridge had collapsed. Though a bridge of few metres, it carries the daily load of tankers conveying refined petroleum products from the Port Harcourt refinery at Alesa-Eleme, through Port Harcourt to other part of Nigeria.
The Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA, had some years ago performed some repair job on the same bridge when it showed signs of crack.
Except for vehicles heading to the Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Ebonyi States section of the East-West road, through the Ogoni section of that critical road, other vehicles and companies that have business at the Oil & Gas Free Zone Authority, OGFZA, Onne, the Eleme refinery, and the Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Company Limited, the bridge is a key logistics infrastructure.
The collapse of this key route would, no doubt, impede the movement of vehicles and heavy-duty vehicles. The Neighbourhood gathered that vehicular movement has shifted to the Agbonchia-Oyigbo link road.
A dangerous road in recent times, abandoned due to kidnapping and activities of Fulani herdsmen, the Agbonchia section also has another small bridge that crosses the Okunu River. This same river flows through Aleto up to the sea through Okrika.
Emergency officials are reported to have moved to the areas to assist control traffic and ensure security.
