The crowd had started pouring into the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium as early as 10 a.m after the various church services. Prayers were offered for iconic Rangers International and some of the fans dedicated their offerings to God to block El Kanemi from making a 32-year wait be in vain.
The gates were thrown open to allow mammoth crowd to be witnesses to another victory by the Antelopes of Enugu. What started smoothly went out of control with the rain. Most of the fans ran riot to avoid the rain and caused commotion.
Almost those who had taken positions at the open terraces wanted to get to the covered stands. Chaos! Security personnel had hectic time controlling them. The Media stand was taken over by the fans who overwhelmed security. The rain, which they said was a blessing, came to “water the earth” according to one of the hit songs of Majek Fashek.

The entry of Davidson Owumi caused another rapture as the fans stood to acknowledge one of the former iconic players and coach of the Coal-City outfit.
The players of Rangers appeared in their immaculate white jersey and the crowd went berserk. El-Kanemi wore Green short and yellow tops.
After the national anthem, Rangers stood for their traditional anthem and 12-gun salute boomed.
Chisom Egbuchulam’s penalty goal brought his tally to 14 this season. Obinna Nwodo scored Rangers second goal in the 42nd minute.
A fan who ran through the jampacked stadium waving the Biafran flag received a very loud ovation. Missiles were thrown onto the pitch as security men tried to stop the man with the Biafran flag. The fans erupted with the song, “we no go gree… we no go gree…. we no go gree.”
Rangers third goal was scored by Chisom Egbuchulam. He had a brace having scored the opener through a penalty. That brought his tally to 15 goals.
The traditional Rangers song of Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, Enugu Rangers … then took over the stadium.
Coach Imama Amapakabo was dressed in white trousers and shirt with red shoes to complete Rangers colours.
What could have been a fourth goal by Rangers was fluffed by number 13 spotted Rangers striker.
Kazeem Yekini in goal for El Kanemi received the marching order for viciously bringing down Ifeanyi Egwim in the box. The resultant penalty was converted by Chisom Egbuchulam to complete a hat-trick and Rangers’ fourth goal.
Egbuchulam who was definitely the star of the day increased his goal tally in the season to 16. Thirty years ago, Ikechukwu Ofoje was captain of Rangers and Christian Chukwu was the coach when the club won their last league title.
