The Nigerian Army Ordnance School, penultimate weekend, treated youths in the Military Cantonment, Ojo in Lagos to a sports fiesta tagged Summer Soccer. This, according to the school authorities, was held to keep the youths on the barracks busy during the long holiday especially at a time many of their fathers, who were soldiers, were away in battle either against Boko Haram or Niger Delta militants with the hope that it will take care of their home fronts and put the soldiers in better frame of minds to do better at their different fronts.
The Summer Soccer ceremony, first of its kind in the cantonment, was preceded by series of life performance, peaked in the final match of the week-long football competitions, presentation of different categories of souvenirs, cash awards and medals including the trophy to the respective team coaches, players and the teams.
The final match, which was commissioned by special guest of honour and Commander of 9 Brigade Command Nigerian Army Ikeja, Brigadier General Sanni Mohammed, saw Fin Nigerite team defeating Camp 2 lifting the trophy with a 3–1 victory.
Speaking to Sports Vanguard after the ceremony, Commandant of the Nigerian Army Ordnance School Ojo, Brigadier General AO Akintade, said the summer soccer programme apart from keep the youths in the Barracks busy, is to discover budding talents who could be useful in the national age grade teams.
“It is not part of the Ordnance programmes. It is just a way of keeping the youths on the Army Cantonment Ojo busy instead of getting themselves engaged in negative vices. Also there are a lot of budding talents in this cantonment who could be useful in age grade football in the country tomorrow, ‘’, General Akintade said, stressing that the programme also helps to keep the minds of soldiers fighting insurgency at rest knowing that their families and the entire barracks at home are happy.
